While this list is not 100% confirmed yet, it contains the names which have been just revealed by the Pokémon IGN. As you can see, there are several names which sound very stupid to me (about 5%). Note that my opinion is well subject to change, so there's no need for any rants. Despite this, I'm still quite satisfied with the overall effort they put into the other names (Chandelure, Ferrothorn, etc.). Perhaps I'll start to get used to them all as time goes by?

All of the mentioned names sound great except for Swoobat, in my opinion. And while we're at it, I think Pignite sounds just as good as these.

Judging by the names only, here's the order of the starters for me:

Serebii has announced thee new English names that he got from a magazine in UK (Excadrill, Sewaddle, Alomomola). The three names match the names mentioned in the list, therefore, I can easily say that these names are now confirmed.

Servine - Meh, it works, but it's a little too obvious.
Serperior - Sounds a bit too much like Rhyperior to me. :/
Sewaddle - Er...what?
Swadloon - It's...OK...I guess...?
Leavanny - At least I won't get Hahakomori with Koromori any more with the new names.
Cottonee - ...really!?
Whimsicott - Woah, what's so whimsical about it? The name's way too long. ._.
Petilil - This is actually an acceptable name, so I'm glad there's at least one.
Lilligant - Again, a bit too predictable.
Maractus - Predictable yet again...
Deerling - X_X
Sawsbuck - Better than Deerling. (But technically anything is better than Deerling. -.-)
Foongus - Sounds funny. FOOOOOOOOONGUS.

Keep in mind we also have stuff like "Seel", "Muk", "Krabby", and "Ninetales." We're stuck with these names so I'm just going to try and get used to them... though not to say I won't be nicknaming most of these Pokemon the names I'm used to hearing!

Well we've got stuff like Seel and Krabby, and we have gotten used to those, so I guess some of these... disagreeable names will get the same treatment. Then againi, there are ones that are pretty good this gen, I would say!

From my limited Japanese experience, that should phonetically translate to "Enbuoo". Because "nb" is very uncommon in English, this would logically be converted to "Embuoo". Because "uoo" is very uncommon in English, this would logically be converted to "Embuor", which again is converted to "Embore"/"Emboar". Just in case anybody wanted to know exactly why how that /isn't/ a meme :P

They get a lot worse than that my friend :P (Abra/Kadabra/Alakazam come immediately to mind)




Everyone has to realize that 1st Gen names were statistically among the least creative: almost all were puns or the Japanese romanization (Pikachu). There were exceptions, sure, but all subsequent generations were actually quite creative.

...The Pokémon themselves, on the other hand, are a whole 'nother story.

That doesn't mean this list is 100% correct.

Let me know when nintendo 100% confirms this list to be 100% correct, not they've revealed a few new names and they match the list so they all must be right because 3 obviously = 200+

I haven't looked at the list yet, and won't until all names are confirmed.
I'll take official updates as they happen.

My opinions on some names... I included all of my favorites (in bold) and just others I had anything to say about. I left out quite a few because I just didn't have any opinion on them.. kinda neutral.

#494 - Victini - Of course he'd stay the same. Not like it bugs me, Victini fits the little critter perfectly.

#505 - Watchog - "Watch-hog?" "Watch-og?"

#572 - Minccino - What was wrong with the romanized Japanese name? Nothing's wrong with this name, but why couldn't they keep the original?

#573 - Cinccino - Keeping the romanized Japanese name would have been even better for this one, imo.

Agreed on everything you said. Kling/Klang/Klinklang have a cool ring to their names, but they are uncreative. Foongus/Amoongus are actually good-sounding names, but I found the pun in them quite hilarious rather than annoying. xD

If something like 10+ English names have been found to match the ones in this list, then it is safe to assume that it is real. After all, who would bother to come up with 600+ fake names for no real reason?

After reading your post and Kaz's, I have to agree. Names like Krabby, Seel and Ninetales seem kind of silly to me now, but we got used to them over the generations despite that. I think the same will happen to the English names of Gen V's Pokémon eventually.

While that explanation works, "Enbuoh" also makes sense, since "En" is flame,
"Buta" is pig, and "Oh" is a shorter version of "Ouja", which means King. Granted, Emboar is much cooler, and the fact it can be phonetically backed up is even more awesome.
